Metal and plastic are great, but these DIY cameras are stand-alone pieces of art
Most of the cameras we write about here at Popular Photography are made of familiar materials like plastic and magnesium alloy. But, the simple fact is you can make a camera out of almost anything. How about a trash bin? Sure! A dead turtle? That's a little creepy, but why not? Photographers are creative people and their imaginations don't end, or even begin with the photograph. Here's a collection of cameras made from odd objects.

Mega Worries

Q. While I continue to be happy with my 6MP Pentax *ist Ds, I am looking to purchase another camera to get image stabilization and auto sensor cleaning. My major concerns with the new cameras are the large files they produce, and the effect this will have timewise on my computer. I have narrowed down my choices to the Pentax K200D (10.2MP) and the Pentax K-x (12.4MP). I am also looking at the Pentax K20D, the K-7, and the K-5, but these three have very high megapixel counts. Any thoughts?

A. It’s a rare day here when we hear from someone who wants less, not more, pixel resolution. Note that your first four choices are discontinued models; while they may be available at some retailers, we’d go instead with the current Pentax K-5 or the new K-30 for improvements in autofocus speed and imaging quality. Both of these cameras offer speedy shooting in a rugged, weatherproof body. With either camera, you can step down the captured JPEG resolution: The 16MP K-5 can be set to 10-, 6-, or 2MP capture, and the 16MP K-30 can be dialed down to 12-, 8-, or 5MP. You can also combine RAW capture with any JPEG resolution.
