Photographers have a love/hate relationship with reflections. Sometimes, they add a powerful compositional element, other times, they ruin everything. So, when our readers turned out such a strong collection of reflection images, we were truly impressed.

L is for Live Music:

Concert venues are notoriously dark, so fast prime lenses and flashes (if allowed) are the way to go. Crank up the ISO: Without a flash, your shutter speed will be slow, but 1/60 sec is the low limit. Noise is better than blur. Set your aperture wide open: For tight shots of individual band members, set aperture priority mode and lock an exposure on a spotmeter reading of the faces. For wide shots, use evaluative metering to get the proper exposure, and shoot in manual to keep that setting locked. Get facial expressions: Staying on the sides of the stage is a great way to do this, but remember to move around throughout the show to get photos of the crowd.

Nikon D5200 dSLR Review

Canon PowerShot N Review

In early January of this year, Nikon announced a new entry-level dSLR model at CES 2013, the D5200. Aimed at photographers looking to make the jump from point-and-shoot cameras, the D5200 offers an affordable option where users will find all the performance and manual image controls in high quality dSLRs, alongside the convenience and built-in artistic flourishes of many point-and-shoot or smart phone camera systems. First, lets talk performance. The D5200 features a 24.1-megapixel DX-format (APS-C sized) CMOS image sensor mated to the EXPEED 3 image processor, which means terrific speed and noise free images in low light situations (even up to an ISO of 6400). The D5200's new 39-point Auto Focus system accurately tracks images through the frame for crisp still images in action oriented shots like sporting events, or continuous focus while shooting Full 1080p HD video at 30 (progressive) or 60 (interlaced) frames per second.

For those less comfortable with interchangeable lens camera systems, don't worry, Nikon's got you covered. Enter the Scene Recognition System, which instantly analyzes exposure, Auto Focus, and white balance settings to perfect color balance and sharpness. If you're a big fan of built-in camera effects, like those found on smart phone apps or an increasing number of point-and-shoot digicams, the D5200 has a few of these as well, designed to work on both stills and HD movie recording... Steve's Photo of the Day Winner

August 25th Winner: A Tiny Fur Coat
by Valerie Nazemi (Canon T1i)

"I used to have a lot of fun taking macro shots with my camera's macro capabilities
& the lens the camera came with. Now I have even more fun appearing to get in close,
while not disturbing the wild things, with a 70-300 mm lens."

Who Needs a dSLR? Amazing Android Photos to Inspire Photographers

Okay, okay, don't get too mad. We still adore our dSLR cameras and it'll be years (or most likely never) before a smartphone can compete with current-model professional cameras thanks to vast differences in image sensor sizes as well as available quality glass (read: lenses)... But there are times when you don't want to lug around the entire kit, times when you weren't even planning to snap a few photos. However, as shutterbugs, many of us feel an innate desire to tell visual stories and capture beautiful imagery. There are times when an image presents itself and all you have is a phone in your pocket. To inspire loyal Android smartphone owners, Mashable assembled a list of... Continue Reading

Canon Direct Announces PowerShot N Facebook Ready Edition

Canon Direct Announces PowerShot N Facebook Ready Edition

When we reviewed Canon's PowerShot N last month, we found it hard to recommend based on its price to performance ratio. Our reviewer thought the N's graphical user interface was a bit clunky and cumbersome, but appreciated the camera's features as well as its simple, sleek design. Looking to improve the N, Canon has announced an updated version of the camera, dubbed the PowerShot N Facebook Ready. The new N Facebook carries over the original N's 12MP HS CMOS image sensor, DIGIC 5 image processor, 8x optical zoom, 2.8-inch tilt / touch LCD display, Full 1080p HD Video, ISO up to 6400 and, of course, built-in WiFi. So what's new? The N's Facebook Connect Button, after an initial setup process, connects users directly to their Facebook account in a way that's much more akin to the Facebook mobile app found on many iOS and Android smartphones. Not only can you... Continue Reading

Sony Unveils Their Most Compact NEX ILC Model Yet: The NEX-5T

Sony has added yet another impressive camera to the ranks of their NEX line-up, this time it's the ultra-compact NEX-5T. Built around the idea of being portable, yet fast, the NEX-5T boasts some appealing features. These include built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology (a first for the NEX line-up), a powerful 16-megapixel Exmor APS-C HD CMOS image sensor, a tilting 3.0-inch display, and their new Fast Hybrid AF system that was first seen in the NEX-5R from last year. This system lends to the NEX-5T's speed with 99 phase-detection AF points. The camera also sports a continuous capture rate of up to 10fps in Speed Priority mode. All of this is packed into a body that's just 1.2-inches thick; sounds like one sweet little pocket-rocket to us. For more details... Continue Reading
