First impressions are strong, but we still have the next few days to see just how well this camera performs out and about. And of course, we will be running it through our test lab in the weeks to come. In the mean time, stay tuned as we will be updating this gallery frequently.

V is for V-Reflector:

One of the most effective reflectors can't be found in stores. Make your own: Tape together two same-size white foamcore boards along the long edge to form a hinge and let them stand freely. Modify light: Place the source within the V-reflector and adjust contrast by opening or closing the hinge. For hard light, place the source close to the hinge and close the doors. For softer output, open them and pull the light back from the hinge. Bonus: A large V-reflector makes an intimate background; see Irving Penn's portraits of Truman Capote or Igor Stravinsky.

U is for Uploading:

Photo-sharing sites can be cruel to your images, skewing their colors and adding artifacts. Give them a fighting chance by prepping them beforehand. Downsize them: Use Photoshop's Save for Web option, which will make for quicker uploads. Make them to measure: Website auto-sizing functions often degrade image quality. So size an image as closely as possible to the dimensions at which it will be displayed. Sharpen after resizing: You'll see more accurately than you would at full-res how sharpening affects the final image. Save images in the sRGB color space: Web browsers prefer this over alternatives such as Adobe RGB.

Pentax K-50 DSLR Review

Pentax K-50 DSLR Review

When you first pick up the Pentax K-50, you can feel that you're holding a well-built camera. The rugged, weather-sealed body feels sturdy, and its adequate yet not oversized handgrip lets you get a firm grasp. The front dial (which sits just below the shutter release button) falls right under the index finger and the rear thumb dial falls conveniently under your thumb for easy operation. Surrounding the four-way control are AF/AE-L, Info and Menu buttons; the live view/trash button sits on the other side of the back panel, left of the optical viewfinder. You can customize the AF/AE-L button, as well as the RAW/Fx button near the lens barrel. The green button that sits just behind the shutter button is not so versatile - it simply serves to cancel whatever parameters you're in the middle of adjusting. But you can adjust a lot of parameters, and you'd have to go quite hog-wild with your settings-adjustment requirements to miss the customizability of the green button. The K-50 offers four pages of custom settings, two user-selectable positions on the mode dial, and you can customize how auto exposure and auto focus operate, as well as customize the two e-dials dependent upon the shooting mode.

With all of that at your fingertips, the handiest menu-navigation tool the K-50 offers is the Info button. In shooting mode, this button pulls up a grid of 15 settings icons. You use the rear dial to change the setting and the icon changes to reflect your change - without you having to press OK on the four-way control to enter the full-blown menu. However, you can not whiz through the icons using the front dial - you have to use the four-way buttons to get to the setting you want to change... Continue Reading

Steve's Photo of the Day Winner

October 10th Winner: B17 with P40 Escort
by Morris Bennett Altman (Nikon D200 SLR)

"I photographed the B17 with P40 escort at the New York Air Snow at Jones Beach New York on Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. It was a stunning day with about 100,000 people in attendance. As it was hot and humid I stood at water's edge with the nice cool Atlantic serf hitting my feet as the 5 foot waves broke farther out. This kept me very comfortable during the exciting 5 hours the show lasted. I converted in ACR adjusting for good contrast, then went into PS CS5 and changed mode to grayscale, then to RGB and used the #85 warming filter to add the sepia tone. Nikon D200 + 80-400 VR @135mm, ISO 400, 1/125, f 25, CPL."

Sony Adds A Powerful New Cyber-shot: the RX10

Sony Adds A Powerful New Cyber-shot: the RX10

Alongside their Alpha 7R and Alpha 7 announcements, Sony also unveiled an appealing new RX-series Cyber-Shot; the RX10. This powerful model builds on the success of their RX100 and RX100 Mark II, offering the same 20.2-megapixel 1-inch Exmor R CMOS image sensor. However, the RX10 takes things in a slightly different direction. Instead of focusing on small size, Sony has given the RX10 a nice large body, which houses a superb 24-200mm Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* zoom lens; which boasts a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range. If that doesn't get you going... Continue Reading

Fujifilm Announces Two Powerful New X-series Cameras: the X-E2 and XQ1

Hot off the press, Fuji has just uncovered two powerful new X-series products. The first is an ILC that promises increased resolution and detail, thanks to its new APS-C sized 16.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS II, which does not include an optical low pass filter like found on most ILCs. Fuji claims it offers the fastest AF in its class, due to their new EXR Processor II. Like past Fuji X-series models, the X-E2 offers... Continue Reading

Sony Debuts Two Powerful New Full Frame ILCs: The Alpha 7R and Alpha 7

Sony has taken their E-mount lens system to a new level today, with the introduction of the Alpha 7R and Alpha 7. The first mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras to offer full-frame sensors, the a7 and a7R now hold the title of the world's smallest full-frame ILCs. You may be wondering, what's the difference between the two? Well, for the most part these two share identical specifications. They both feature dust and moisture resistant bodies, Sony's completely redesigned BIONZ X processor, increased AF capabilities, built in Wi-Fi, full 1080 HD video recording at 60p, NFC technology for use with smart devices, a tilting 3.0-inch LCD, and the same XGA OLED Tru-finder EVF we've all come to love on the NEX-7.

The main difference between the two is... Continue Reading
