Photo Glossary: Cookies

This photographic term refers to a lighting tool that originated in the film industry and migrated to still photography. A cookie is a stenciled pattern cut from craft paper, wood, or aluminum sheeting that is used between a light source and a background, on which it casts distinctive shadows. The shadows may mimic those cast by a latticed window frame or dappled sunlight. The world is a shortening of cuculoris, a term of unknown origin (and many different spellings!) that the British etymologist Michael Quinion posits may be based on cumulus, the Latin word for hood or cowl.
