Preparing to Rock Out
Q. What's the best way to prepare for a live concert shoot?
A. Sami Siilin of Espoo, Finland, shoots lots of rock acts. And while he has great gear and often photopit access, he attributes some of his photo success to YouTube.

What’s happening on stage is constantly changing, he says. The musicians move, and the lights change color and intensity. Most of it is choreographed in advance, and is the same for every show. “So before the show, I watch previous live performances on YouTube. Previewing the show helps me position myself, preselect a lens, and preset my camera.”

Online videos can also help you determine which music acts put on the most energetic shows and will therefore photograph best.
