TECH SUPPORT Did You Know? Q. What is zoom creep, and how can I avoid it? A. Zoom lenses with loose turning actions often suffer from something called zoom creep. It can be vexing when, for example, you hike with a long zoom hanging from a neckstrap and it slowly extends from a conveniently compact state to a longer, chest-thumping log. To prevent creep, some lenses have a zoom lock to maintain a compact profile. Zoom creep can also reduce sharpness. With a loose-turning lens, when the camera is aimed up or down, the zooming elements can move during exposure, resulting in a softer image. To avoid it, lock the zoom ring either with the lens’s zoom lock, or—as pros who shoot from the rafters above sports arenas do—use gaffer’s tape to tame that creep. |
