If I move from a 10MP camera (Canon EOS 40D) to an 18MP (EOS 60D), will I see a difference in image quality in modestly cropped prints up to about 11x14 or 13x19? A. You will see a noticeable increase in sharpness in the images from the 18MP camera, especially if you look at the prints a few inches from your face. A critical factor that people often forget (and we’re guilty of this, too) is viewing distance, as you don’t ordinarily view a large print on the wall with your nose right up to it. A typical close viewing distance for the print sizes you mention would be 27 to 30 inches, where you wouldn’t be able to detect much difference in sharpness, if at all. However, while an increase to 18MP from 10MP might sound like a big jump, our lab tests showed an increase of about 24 percent (2100 lines per picture height for the 40D versus 2600 lines for the 60D)—substantial, but not huge.
