What Exactly is Bokeh?

Bokeh is a Japanese word that refers to the visual characteristics of defocused areas in a picture. Some glass is said to produce better bokeh than others, meaning that the defocused areas show soft edges and specular highlights that are more perfectly circular, not slightly amorphous. Few lenses offer the gorgeous bokeh of an 85mm f/1.4 or f/1.2.

The look can make for romantically dreamy backgrounds. Shooting at f/1.4, even if a wall is only several feet behind your subject, can produce a satisfyingly defocused backdrop that will throw all attention where you want it, as well as declutter whatever mess or distractions might have been back there.
