An advanced compact proves powerful, in spite of its size
The newly developed 1-inch sensor in Sony’s pocket-sized Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 ($648, street) measures precisely 13.2x8.8mm. To put this in perspective, it has about 2.7 times the surface area of the 1/1.7-inch sensor in Canon's S100. That is, indeed, large for a compact. But how does it stack up in our lab test?

Q. Can you suggest a good HDR program that will accept a single RAW file for processing? The ones I’m familiar with seem to accept only TIFFs, and they need multiple files to create HDR images.

A. No program will do what you want. For good dynamic range from a single file, just use RAW conversion software (we highly recommend Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4) to draw out a maximum range of tones from your images. For making HDRs from multiple RAW files, a good choice is Adobe Photoshop HDR Pro, as are Unified Color HDR Express and HDR Expose.
