HDR Numbers Game
Q. Is there an optimum number of images one should take when creating an HDR image? When shooting with exposure compensation, my Canon EOS 5D Mark II permits exposures in a range of up to 4 stops, and my EOS 7D in a range of up to 10 stops.
A. High dynamic range (HDR) photography compensates for the limited dynamic range that the sensors in digital cameras can capture. We have not developed guidelines for how many images to capture, because this very much depends on what you are shooting, what the lighting is like at the time, and what you want the result to look like.

If you’re trying to capture a really wide dynamic range, it makes sense to shoot more frames (although we think many people are overdoing the number of HDR exposures these days). You want proper exposure for areas in the image that would become blown out by overexposure or blocked up by underexposure, while still providing plenty of information in those areas where you think that tonal transitions would benefit from the added bits.
