Q.Is there a good rule of thumb for using lenshoods, are they even necessary?

A.You should use a lenshood whenever possible. By blocking light from striking the front of the lens directly, hoods help reduce flare, particularly the dreaded coma-type that puts those comet-tailed spots in your photos. They also keep the front element and filter ring from getting whacked, help prevent fingerprints, and shield the glass from raindrops.
