Tip of the Week

Question:
Do UV or circular polrizing filters cause zoomed images to be blurred? I have done some unscientific testing using my Pentax K10D with Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II APO EX DG Macro lens and UV or circular polarizing filters. pictuers taken at maximum zoom are blurry if I use either of the filters, but they're significantly clearer with the bare lens. Is this result normal?

Answer:
What your tests revealed is that, with filters, quality matters. Cheap glass, poor flatness and inadequate coatings can cause image degradation. That's why we recommend only the top name-brand filters. Of course, they cost more, but you get what you pay for.
