Nikon D600 Review

Nikon D600 Review

The Nikon D600 is entering a bit of new territory, giving their FX-format Full-Frame shooters the option of a smaller, lighter camera body with the image quality, sensitivity and performance of their larger, professional series of dSLR cameras. On the other hand, they are also offering a smaller, cheaper solution to those who are on the fence about spending the big money and carrying a monster of a camera. The Full-Frame 24.3-Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor is combined with Nikon's Expeed 3 image processor and a blazing fast AF system to give you all of the speed, quality and benefits of a professional camera with a much smaller price tag. They have included all the great extra features as well; WiFI capabilities with an optional adapter, dual card slots, i-TTL control with built-in flash unit, built-in RAW (NEF) and HDR processing, Full 1080p HD video recording and the availability of the huge selection of NIKKOR lenses... Steve's Photo of the Day Winner
March 12th Winner: Dumped Again
by Mary-Ella Bowles (Canon 5D)

"I spotted this crane unloading sand from a ship. The repetitive motion going back and forth with its load gave me many opportunities to experiment with different settings etc.. I was struck by the beauty of the cascading sand in this particular shot."

A Giant Wave Crashes a Marriage Proposal

Matthew Hartman had the perfect proposal planned. He wrote a song to play for his then girlfriend, found a perfect rock so stand on near the ocean, and recruited his photographer friend Jonathan Hwang to capture the whole thing. He played his song, got down on one knee, pulled the ring out, and was then knocked off of the rock by a giant, unexpected wave... Continue Reading

Canon Creates a Full-frame CMOS Sensor for Shooting Video in Low Light

Canon Creates a Full-frame CMOS Sensor for Shooting Video in Low Light

Low light situations are a pain, but Canon's new video sensor is made to solve that. The company has created a full-frame 35mm sensor that can shoot HD video in places with just 0.03 lux of illumination. Canon says that this is the point where the human eye has trouble distinguishing objects, and that this camera is up to the task of delivering high quality video in near darkness. In order to do this, Canon took a page out of HTC's playbook and lowered the pixel count. The sensor offers up just 2-megapixels, but each of those pixels is around 7.5 times larger than those found on modern sensors. That's not all there is to it though - Canon has specially engineered hardware as well as software alogarithms in order to provide the best low light performance possible... Continue Reading

Amazing Macro Snowflake Photos Captured with an iPhone and $5 Accessory

We can talk about gear all we want, but when it comes right down to it, photographers that know what they're doing can create great photos with even the simplest of tools. Photographer Bob Woodworth managed some very cool macro shots of snowflakes using only an iPhone 5 and a macro attachment that he picked up for $5 on Amazon. The result is pretty phenomenal. Woodworth took the shots outdoors against his dark backpack and ended up with a series of very nice looking pictures... Continue Reading

Olympus PEN E-PM2 Review

Samsung NX1000 Review

If you're in the market for interchangeable lens cameras, the Olympus PEN E-PM2 gives some very nice image quality and performance. The PM2 works fast, shoots great photos, and includes a high-quality widescreen LCD, which is great for helping you frame your full HD movies. It's also a stylish camera with a retro look. The E-PM2 is missing a few of the newest features, such as an articulated LCD or built-in GPS. Without those items Olympus probably overpriced the PM2 a bit upon its introduction at about $600. The price has been quickly discounted, though, and it now provides a great value, especially considering that Olympus has included a starter lens and an external flash unit with the basic camera kit. The E-PM2 offers quite a few upgrades over its predecessor, the PM1, including a 16.1 megapixel image sensor. Even though the PEN E-PM2 doesn't have high-end features, the camera's performance and image quality results are great for a model in this price range... Continue Reading

The Curiosity Rover Sends Down a Panoramic Self Portrait

While no photographer worth his salt will encourage the arm-out self portrait that's so common on Facebook, we're going to go ahead and say that it's okay to do if you're stranded on a planet over 100 million miles from Earth. The latest images from the Curiosity rover are fascinating. The panorama is taken in the Gale Crater on Mars and gives us a good look at the Martian landscape. You can also see... Continue Reading
