Glass Glossary

Floating elements: An element or group of elements that moves independently of other groups and elements during focusing. Floating elements allow lens designs that minimize aberrations at the full range of focusing distances, near to far.

Geometric distortion: The characteristic stretching of the image seen at the ends of the frame in wide-angle shots. Not really a flaw, just the way light and lenses work. Can be minimized with Volume Anamorphosis Correction in DxO Optics Pro.

No color, plenty of drama
Landscape photography is a delicate artform that depends not just on the skill of the photographer, but on an endless number of environmental elements. Last month, for our monthly photo challenge, we asked you to go out into the wilderness and come back with a powerful landsape shot. The catch? It had to be in black-and-white.

QUICK TIP

Shoot Better Food Photos

One method for ensuring an attractive plate portrait is to light it the way you would a face. Whether you’re using sunlight, accessory flash, or strobe, your primary goal is to illuminate your subject without creating glare. To scatter sunlight, put diffusion paper over a window or just use a sheer curtain. If you’re going with artificial light, accessories such as umbrellas, softboxes, or beauty dishes will help soften the effect.
